WHAT IS EMBASSY ATTESTATION?

Embassy attestation is the legalisation of a document for use in another country.

Embassy attestation is a process of authenticating and verifying the legal documents issued in one country, by the embassy or consulate of another country. This process is commonly required for a variety of reasons such as employment, education, business, and personal reasons, particularly when traveling or relocating to a foreign country.

Why is attestation required?

Embassy attestation is a crucial step in the process of international document legalisation. It confirms the validity of the document, the identity of the person who issued it, and the authenticity of the information contained in it. Embassy attestation is mandatory for many countries that are not members of the Hague Convention to ensure that the documents submitted to the relevant authorities are accepted.

The Embassy Attestation Process

The process of embassy attestation involves several steps, depending on the country and the type of document being attested. This commonly includes-

  • Document checks and certification by a solicitor
  • Apostille from UK government
  • Embassy attestation stamps or certificate

How it works

Document Checks

The first step is to make sure the document is authenticated by the relevant authority in the issuing country. For instance, this could be a registrar of births, a criminal records officer or a court seal. Many documents that are not authenticated require further certification by a solicitor. For example, for educational documents, these are not signed by officially authenticated so a solicitor must check the documents and apply a certification.

FCDO Apostille

After the document has been authenticated by the issuing authority, it must be legalised by the relevant government department in the issuing country. In the UK this is the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

Embassy Attestation

Once the document has been authenticated by the FCDO, it can then be submitted to the embassy or consulate of the country where it is to be used. The embassy or consulate will verify the document and attest it, confirming its authenticity and legal validity.
