EMBASSY ATTESTATION FAQs

Answering your frequently asked questions on embassy attestation.

Embassy attestation is a process that involves several steps. Document checks, solicitor certification, legalisation with the UK government and presenting documents to a country’s embassy in London. Here we guide you through some of the questions we are commonly asked.

Embassy attestation is a process of legalising UK documents that are to be used in a foreign country. The embassy of the foreign country, located in the UK, verifies the authenticity of the document and attests it by placing a stamp, certificate or seal on it.

We work with many of the overseas embassies in London when full embassy attestation is required as well as the apostille. Our website includes the countries we work with on a daily basis to attest UK documents. You will find these embassies on our embassy attestation page but we also work with many others. Please contact one of the legalisation team to find out the embassy attestation procedure relating to the country you are dealing with.

The processing time for each country can vary by embassy and the time of year. The typical times is around 7-1o working days and we aim to provide the best estimated times on each embassy service page.

The cost of embassy attestation varies depending on the country, the type of document, and the level of service required. Some embassies have different procedures for different types of documents. A document may go direct to the embassy or through a chamber of commerce or through a third party process.

The embassy attestation fees that we quote include all necessary costs. We pay for all travel costs, handling charges and disbursements incurred processing your order. If your documents also require an apostille these fees will be confirmed at the time of ordering. We will ensure that all relevant steps to have the document legalised correctly are taken. If there are any problems whilst the documents are with the embassy we will deal with this on your behalf to complete the legalisation service. If for any reason the embassy refuse to accept your document we will refund the embassy part of the process for you.

If you have UK issued documents but live outside of the UK awe can assist you with a complete attestation service. You do not need to return to the UK.

Attesting documents will normally mean contacting a UK solicitor, submitting documents to the UK government and finally presenting them to the embassy. Our service will take care of every step for you. Simply send us your document and let us complete the process for you. Using our service will save you time and money on expensive flights.

With over 20 years experience dealing with embassies on a daily basis we understand how difficult and frustrating it can be trying to legalise documents for use overseas. A lot of the embassies are difficult to contact and will only open their phone lines for a few hours each day. Emails go unanswered, premium phone lines cost a lot of money to call and many do not provide instructions on the specific requirements meaning your documents may be rejected and delayed. As one of the UK’s leading attestation services we know how to submit documents to each embassy to ensure documents are correctly attested. Using our service will save you both time and money and is considerably less stressful than trying to complete the process yourself.

Embassy attestation is required for various purposes such as employment, higher education, migration, and business purposes. It is a legal requirement in many countries to have certain documents attested by the embassy of the destination country.

If a country is not a member of The Hague Convention, and issue/accept apostilles, embassy stamps may be required to fully legalise a document for that country.

The simple answer is, many UK documents may need attesting. If you have been asked to get a UK document attested then it will need a complete attestation service before it will be accepted.

It is common to process educational certificates, marriage certificates, birth certificates, police clearance certificates, and commercial documents such as power of attorney, commercial invoices, and company documents may require embassy attestation. Please see our document pages for more detailed lists of documents we process.

Embassy attestation and apostille are both methods of legalising/authenticating documents for use in foreign countries. The main difference is that apostille is a simplified form of document legalisation that is used between countries that are signatories to the Hague Convention, while embassy attestation is used for non-Hague countries that request further legalisation at the embassy.
