Get an Apostille for a DBS Certificate
DBS certificates are issued by the Disclosure and Barring Service to reveal and reveal criminal history (spent/unspent). If you need to use a UK DBS certificate overseas, it will usually require an apostille from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).

DBS certificates are issued without a formal government signature or seal. As a result, the FCDO cannot add an apostille directly to the document.
To make the document eligible for the apostille, the original DBS certificate must first be certified by a UK solicitor.
The solicitor will:
- Check that the DBS certificate is the original document
- Stamp the document with a statement confirming it is original
- Apply their signature, date and location
Once the solicitor has certified the document, it becomes eligible for the apostille. The apostille certificate is then attached to the back of the document, confirming the authenticity of the solicitor’s signature.
