There are many schools overseas that offer a British Curriculum to their students. Overseas schools describing themselves as “British” are subject to recognition by the British government via a voluntary inspection scheme operated by the Department for Education in the UK.

These schools will educate students from the ages of 3 to 18 who will then sit IGCSE and A Level exams in accordance with the British Curriculum. Historically, the exam certificates issued would be recognised by authorities in that country, for example, a student who obtained their A Level certificates at a British School in Spain could then apply for Higher Education at a Spanish University without the need for any further recognition of their qualifications.

Following the exit of the UK from the European Union this is, unfortunately, no longer the case. UK qualifications obtained from British Overseas Schools now need to be legalised in order to be formally recognised by non-UK authorities. Acceptance of a UK exam certificate by a non-UK authority is now predicated on the document being firstly certified by a UK solicitor and also then being issued with a Hague Apostille certificate.
